Jahangir Peer Dargah

Hazrat Jahangir Peeran and Hazrat Burhanuddin, saints from Baghdad visited this place and preached Islam and Message of love. Devotees used to treat the saints with great affection and respect. The saints stayed here till they breathed their last. With due respect, their tombs are constructed which is now the great Jahangir Peer Dargah. Irrespective of religion, devotees visit the place and seek the holy blessings of the saints as they believe that their wishes come true. Annual Urs is celebrated every year with great devotion and and dedication to commemorate the great saints. As described, there is no communal barrier at this holy place. Devotees participate in huge numbers to carry the procession. The annul Urs celebrated here is most acclaimed domestically and internationally.

Spanish Mosque

Also known as Masjid Iqbal ud Dowla or Jam e Masjid Aiwan E- Begumpet is another heritage site. It was constructed in an inspiration from the mosques in Spain due to which it has derived its name. Maula Ali Dargah

The dargah was built by Qutub shahi rulers and now it is considered as a heritage site. It is situated on a hillock known as Maula Ali hill. History suggests that the senior accountant, Yaqut was asleep in the Qutub Shahi rulers palace and dreamt about a man in green robes introduced himself to Yaqut as Maula Ali (Fatima’s husband and son in law of Prophet Mohammed). Yaqut followed Maula Ali to a hillock. Maula Ali was resting his hand on a rock. Yaqut fell down before Maula Ali and suddenly woke up from his dream. The next day Yaqut was out in search of the hill and finally found with the hand print on the rock after which the famous dargah was built.
The popular shi’ite site is considered as one of the best tourist destinations in Hyderabad. Before entering the hillock, there stands a huge entrance known as Maula Ali Kaman representing the style and architecture of Qutub Shahis.

Best temples in Hyderabad
Though Hyderabad is not a famous pilgrimage destination, there are well known temples with historical, mythological and architectural significance. The blend of modern and ancient architectures makes them worth a visit at least once in a lifetime. Also, I’ll take you through the least known but unique temples of the city. Let’s have a glance of each of them.
Birla Mandir

I guess most of the non locals might also know about this temple built with marble. Another master piece which is very close to Hussain Sagar stands on a hillock called Naubath Pahad. The temple, constructed by Birla Foundation was opened in the year 1976 by Swami Raghunathananda of Ramakrishna mission. Alongside, the main shrine, granite idol of Lord Venkateshwara; shrines of Ganesh, Shiva, Hanuman, Brahma and Saraswati, Shakti and Sai Baba co exists here. You can enjoy the mesmerising view of Hussain Sagar on one side and busy streets of central Hyderabad on the other from this elevated hillock. The only disadvantage here is that you are not allowed to capture the snaps of this amazing temple and premises as you have to submit all your electronic gadgets at the security which you will only be able to recollect once you come out of the temple.

Chilkur Balaji

A shrine of Lord Venkateshwara also known as Lord Balaji located on the extreme south west corner of Hyderabad. The worshippers here believe that the offerings of 11 circumambulations (pradakshana) will fulfill their wish after which they have to visit here again to accomplish 108 circumambulations. It is believed that 11 denotes for 1 soul and 1 body. Similarly 108 circumambulations, 1 is for existence, almighty or god, 0 represents illusionary world and 8 represents the time the human body takes to come in to existence. This temple is also known as Visa Balaji as the devotees believe that their visa approvals will be completed after they visit this shrine. It is a very old temple which was built during the regime of Akkanna- Madanna brothers, accountants of the Nizam and uncles of Sri Bhakta Ramadas, the ardent devotee of Lord Sri Rama.
Legend suggests that a devotee of Lord Venkateshwara who visits the holy shrine of Tirupati every year to seek the divine blessings of the Lord once could not make it through as his health was not supportive. Later the Lord appears in his dream informing him about his existence in nearby village and instructed him to dig a nearby place. The very next day the devotee followed the instructions and dug the place. To his surprise, he found blood oozing from the ground and later found an idol of Lord Venkateshwara or Lord Balaji. The place now become a holy shrine of Chilkur Balaji.

Keesara Gutta

Situated on a small hillock, on the north east corner of Hyderabad. The devotees believe that Lord Sri Rama has installed the Shiva Linga to recompense the sin of killing Ravana. Lord Hanuman worshipped the Linga due to which the hillock attained the name Keesaragutta or Keesaragiri, as Lord Hanuman being the son of Kesari. Once you are out of the temple, you can find 108 Lingams scattered all over the hill. You can enjoy the greenery and beauties of the nature while passing through the valley. The Hanuman Temple at Cheeryal village is just a mile away from this holy shrine.

Puri Jagannath

The temple is a replica of the actual Jagannath temple at Puri, Orissa. A rath Yatra is conducted here as well which is similar to that of Puri. The design, construction and every aspect is similar to that of the Jagannath temple at Puri. This modern temple was constructed by Odia community of Hyderabad. The shrines include Lakshmi, Shiva, Ganesh, Hanuman and Navagraha alongside the main shrine of Shri Jagannath. Ujjaini Mahankali Temple

Ujjaini Mahankali/ Mahakali temple is well known temple located in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad. The always crowded temple in the busiest area of Secunderabad is well known for Bonalu and Dussera celebrations. Cholera was widespread across the state which caused many fatalities in the year 1813. A devotee by name Suriti Appaiah who was in Ujjain with the military battalion prayed to the goddess Mahakali that he would install the idol if the epidemic gets controlled. Gradually the epidemic was under control and as per the vow, Suriti Appaiah along with other members of the battalion installed the idol after which the temple was constructed and Bonalu festival came into existence. Presently the temple is managed by Endowment department. Besides, the main deity of Goddess Mahankali or Mahakali, there exists other deities of Lord Shiva, Shri Chandi Matha and Shri Bala Matha.

Peddamma Temple

Located once at an isolated place of Hyderabad, now considered as one of the busiest places of the city. One of the most crowded temples and peak time is during Bonalu festivities on every Sundays during the month of July- August. The deities here are Lakshmi, Ganapathy and Sarawswati. Devotees assemble at a point in the temple premises and place the 1 rupee or 2 rupee coin vertically as they believe that their wishes come true if the coin stands without any support.

Sanghi Temple

Most of you might be well versed with this temple as we have seen this in many Bollywood movies. The temple was built by Sanghi Family. The raja gopuram (the sacred temple top) can be seen from miles away. The temple is located on a small hillock known as Paramanand giri. The main shrine being Lord Venkateshwara, there are several other shrines including Ganesh, Hanuman etc. The temple is very close to Ramoji Film city and Mount Opera (waterpark). It is a beautiful construction with greenery and temple complexes are scattered in the garden premises.
Sanghi Temple Timings
Sanghi temple, on any week day opens at 8 AM and closes at 12 PM, reopens again at 4 PM till 8 PM. The timings slightly vary on a weekend. Saturdays, the temple operates from 6 AM to 12 PM and 4 PM to 8 PM as the day being an auspicious and dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara. On Sundays, the temple is open from 8 AM to 8 PM.

Balkampet Yellamma Temple

Before the formation of the city, the villagers dug a well for agriculture purposes and found the Goddess idol which was immovable. So they have left the idol as is and constructed a small temple here which is now a famous shrine. The goddess is known as Yellamma or Jala Durga due to the idol is placed under water in a well. You can often find the crowds during July when the Bonalu festival falls. The water here is believed to have curative powers and devotees carry the water in bottles. Maha Bodhi Buddha Vihar

It was constructed by Maha Bodhi Charitable Society on a hilly area known as Mahendrahills. The monastery is beautifully designed and has a prayer hall for meditation. Shyam Mandir

Located in the prime locality just opposite to the Kacheguda railway station. It was built on a very small hillock known as Veeranna gutta, as the temple of Lord Veerabhadra Swamy exists here. Later the Shyam mandir was built in the year 1995 with Shyam baba being the main shrine. The shrines of Lord Shri Krishna, Hanuman, Shiva, Ganesh and Veerabhadra Swamy co-exist here. Janmashtami is celebrated on a high spirits. Matki (pot) breaking ceremony and cultural activities draws the attention of the huge crowd gathered and never to be missed. A typical tradition is followed in the Hanuman mandir in the temple premises. Whenever a reasonable crowd assembles, the aarti is performed. Akkanna Madanna Temple

Akkanna and Madanna, the twin brothers worked as ministers in Nizam kingdom. They are the maternal uncles of Shri Bhakta Ramadas, an ardent devotee of Lord Rama. It was belived that they were beheaded by the rival army. A temple was constructed at Sha ali Banda old city as a memory to the contribution to their work.
Chitragupta Temple

The 200 year old lesser known temple built by Kayasthas in the old city is dedicated to Chitragupta, the accountant of Lord Yama who accounts the sins committed by human on earth which leads to appropriate punishment from Lord Yama, the Lord of death or the Lord of Hell. It is unique and one and only known temples of Chitragupta. I request you to take out sometime while you visit Charminar as you will not be able to find this rarest of the rare.
Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple (Kodanda Ramalayam)

Believed to be built 1000 years ago, dedicated to Lord Rama before he met Hanuman. According to hindu mythology, Lord Rama visited this place who was in search of Sita after she was abducted by Ravana. It is very old temple with seven story tower. There is a pond surrounded by porticos. Sri Rama Navami is celebrated with great passion and dedication. Telugu movies are frequently shot here.

Divya Sanketam- Statue of Equality (Sri Ramanujan Statue)

swarna shilpi vivekananda kali mandir

A replica of Kolkata’s Dakshineshwar Kali mandir known as Swarna Shilpi Vivekananda Kali Mandir was inaugurated by Shri Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamy on January 28th 2020 and now is open to public. The temple constructed with modern and elegant architecture has the deities of Maa Kaali, Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna and Lord Venkateshwara. The must visit shrine in Hyderabad especially in the evening where you can enjoy the temple’s architecture alongside the colourful lights. Tadbund Hanuman Temple

Another popular and very old temple is situated in the northern part of Hyderabad known as Tadbund. Thousands of devotees visit this temple especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Karmanghat Hanuman Temple

Constructed in 12th century AD by Kakatiya ruler. It is believed that he heard a voice chanting Sri Rama and then discovered the idol of Sri Hanuman in the middle of a dense forest. It is also learnt that Moghul emperor Aurangazeb tried to demolish the temple but in vain. When he was trying, there was a voice which warned him “mandir todna hai rajan toh kar man ghat” (translated as “if you want to demolish the temple, oh king, make your heart bold”). Since then, this place is named as Karmanghat. A large number of devotees visit this temple every day to offer their prayers and perform rituals. This number significantly increases on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Annadanam i.e. serving free meal is conducted every day except Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Karigiri Venkateswara Swamy Temple

Uppal, one of the prominent residential and commercial hub of Hyderabad, situated at the eastern corner of the city, is one of the fastest growing destinations in Hyderabad. With in 3 kilometres from the Uppal cross roads and Uppal metro, there exists a landmark destination, the shrine of Lord Venkateswara known as Karigiri Venkateswara Swamy temple. The temple was built in a large premises and able to accommodate hundreds of devotees. Vykunta ekadashi is celebrated with great devotion. Devotees first worship Lord Ganesha in the temple premises before taking the holy blessings of the main deity of Lord Venkateswara. Navagraha, Maha Lakshmi and Lord Hanuman are the other deities. The temples of these deities are scattered on the temple premises. The temple was recently renovated. The priests are friendly and do not hesitate to share the legend associated with the place. The premises also has a recreational hall where cultural and devotional activities are conducted.

The temple is also known for its architectural beauty with sculptures, paintings and cravings. One can notice the sculptures of Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu relaxing in pala samudram and Lord Narasimha Swamy. There is also a small garden in the premises with the sculptures. The other attractions include wall paintings and wall cravings. You will not miss to have a snap of these mesmerising arts, thanks to the temple authorities as they allow us to take the pictures. But a point to be noted here is the management will not allow us in shorts or other trendy outfits.

Ratnalayam

On the way to Shamirpet lake, you can divert towards right and enter Aliabad where you can find a holy shrine of Lord Venkateshwara known as Ratnalayam. The beautiful temple with gardens consists of shrines of Ganesh, Hanuman, Padmavathi and Aluvelu manga alongside the main shrine of Lord Venkateshwara. Daily, weekly rituals are conducted with a great devotion. Brahmotsavam similar to that of Tirupati is also conduct during the dussera festival. The place is well known and often crowded with devotees. A must visit place.

Wargal Saraswati Temple

Shri Yayavaram Chandrashekhara Sharma constructed the temple. He is a devotee of goddess Saraswati, the deity of education. It is situated at Wargal, a town which is 25 kilometers from Shamirpet (Hyderabad). The temple situated on a small hillock consists of other deities like Ganesh, Shani, and Lord Shiva alongside Sri Vidya Saraswati. Devotees often visit here and conduct their children’s Akshara Bhyasam (learning ceremony) before joining them in a school. The rituals are conducted on daily basis and special poojas are performed on ashwayuja Mula which falls on the 7th day of duserra which is considered as an auspicious day for Saraswati Pooja.
